Cover Reveal: THE STAND-IN by Steve Bloom

We're so excited to share the cover of Steve Bloom's YA novel, THE STAND-IN, available on October 10th, 2016 by Carolrhoda Lab™. While Steve has been a working screenwriter for over 30 years -- James and the Giant Peach and The Sure Thing are among his credits! --THE STAND-IN is his first novel for teens.
Brooks Rattigan didn’t do it for the money.  Well, not at first.

When Brooks volunteered to be a stand-in for Burdette’s cousin who got stood up for Homecoming, it was with the noblest of intentions—helping his fellow man, free of charge.  But when he is tipped over three hundred bucks, word spreads quickly among the one percent in the Tri-State area. Brooks seizes the opportunity to raise some extra money by offering his impeccable escort services to grateful and super-wealthy helicopter parents who want their daughters to experience those “once-in-a-lifetime” social events of senior year.

Besides, Brooks could use the cash to hire a tutor to help him raise his wretched Verbal scores the seventy-five points he needs to get admitted to Columbia University, his one chance out of Pritchard and up the ladder to the success which he so fervently desires.  So what if along the way he goes along with a few minor deceptions and cuts a few moral corners?  What’s the harm?

Unfortunately, Brooks didn’t count on the deranged Celia Lieberman…

Or the alluring Shelby Pace.

And here's Steve's cover!

Steve's thoughts on the cover design process:

Designer Danielle Carnito’s brilliant cover totally knocks me out. To me, the bold yet deceptively simple design works on multiple levels. It succinctly communicates the book’s hook. The “fill-in-the-blank” black cut-out visually embodies what a stand-in is. The graphic of the boy and girl holding hands with the wrist corsage instantly evokes high school and prom. Thematically, the blank cut-out of the boy’s hand and sleeve also captures the root of my main character Brooks’ problem—that he is incomplete and unformed, that he doesn’t know who he is.

A home run of a cover for which I am most grateful. Thanks again, Danielle!

About Steve:

A working screenwriter for TV and movies for over 30 years, Steve Bloom attended Brown University and the graduate film production program at University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Among his produced credits are the films The Sure Thing, James and the Giant Peach, and Tall Tale. The Stand-In is his first novel. The idea came to him when a friend asked if Bloom’s daughter might know someone who could escort his daughter to a dance when her date suddenly canceled. Steve lives in western Massachusetts with his wife, Jennifer, and their French bulldog, Ricky.
