The Driver's Seat

Get behind the wheel with our new weekly writing inspiration!

Midweek on the Highway used to be reserved for Road Trip Wednesday, an interactive feature that let readers find book recommendations, share writing snippets, and make friends all over the bookish internet. But the community and technology change, and all good things must come to an end. So today we're excited to debut a new weekly feature: The Driver's Seat

Every Wednesday, I'll be bringing you a post full of writing inspiration -- photos, music, first lines, POV challenges, and more. If you miss the interactive element of RTW, and these prompts inspire you to write something, feel free to share! Post it on Tumblr (or your own site), then hashtag the post (or tweet) with #yahighway. We'll do our best to share your genius.

You can also get involved in other ways: Use this form to submit inspirations, and/or volunteer to curate a post of your own! We'd love to see a variety of contributors (because otherwise, y'all are going to be stuck with my indie rock collection and questionable sense of humor forever).

true story
Seattle's Mystery Soda Machine:
"On the corner of John Street and 10th Avenue East, in the heart of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood lies the world’s most mysterious soda vending machine. Nobody knows the true history of the rusting machine, which looks like it was spat straight out of the Seventies, but locals continue to plunk down their change and the machine never seems to run out of stock. Who first installed the outdoor machine, who stocks it, and who collects the money are all a mystery."
