Here at the Highway, we focus on young adult, but we also love a good middle grade book. Today we're excited to reveal the cover of one coming from Farrar, Straus & Giroux in August 2016: The Rat Prince, by Bridget Hodder. Be sure to scroll down and enter her giveaway!
A little teaser:
The dashing Prince of the Rats--who's in love with Cinderella--is turned into her coachman by the Fairy-Goddess on the night of the big ball. And he's about to turn the legend (and the evening) upside down on his way to a most unexpected happy ending!
Here's what Bridget has to say about the cover:
"Bridget, I promise--your cover will be beautiful."
Several months after my editor, Margaret Ferguson, said this to me with a smile over lunch, the cover for THE RAT PRINCE landed in my inbox.
And oh, did Margaret keep her promise.
My first coherent thought was: This artist gets it.
Prince Char (the cover hero) is Prince of the Rats of the Northern Realm. He's wily, mischievous, a bit ruthless, and has more than his fair share of pride. But he's also a true friend, a noble soul and a hopeless romantic. And that's before the fairy-goddess makes him human on the night of Cinderella's ball.
It's a tall order for an artist to get all that across in a single powerful image. But my cover artist, Charles Santoso, absolutely nailed it.
Which isn't surprising, considering that his credits include concept and design work on The Lego Movie and Guardians of Ga'hoole, as well as covers for major publishers and books of his own, such as I Don't Like Koala and Thoughts & Dreams. (Check out his work at http://www.charlessantoso.com/wp/)
If anyone has any questions, I'll be over here in the corner, quietly feeling all the feels. And hoping that when this book comes out next year, you'll join me.
