Blog Tour: THE FEVER by Megan Abbott & Giveaway!!

We're so excited to take part in the blog tour for Megan Abbott's The Fever!

Several of us here at YA Highway had the chance to read The Fever early, and it's one we just had to talk about -- I remember freakout texting Kate Hart the moment I finished. What a book! Although it's not marketed as YA, it works very well as a crossover, with numerous teenage POV characters and a storyline that delves deep into the dark, twisty labyrinths of high school relationships.

To win a copy of THE FEVER, check out the end of this post!

The summary:
The panic unleashed by a mysterious contagion threatens the bonds of family and community in a seemingly idyllic suburban community.

The Nash family is close-knit. Tom is a popular teacher, father of two teens: Eli, a hockey star and girl magnet, and his sister Deenie, a diligent student. Their seeming stability, however, is thrown into chaos when Deenie's best friend is struck by a terrifying, unexplained seizure in class. Rumors of a hazardous outbreak spread through the family, school and community.

As hysteria and contagion swell, a series of tightly held secrets emerges, threatening to unravel friendships, families and the town's fragile idea of security.

A chilling story about guilt, family secrets and the lethal power of desire, THE FEVER affirms Megan Abbott's reputation as "one of the most exciting and original voices of her generation.” (Laura Lippman)

My question for Megan:

One of my favorite parts of The Fever was how the book played with magical realism elements; the central mystery (what is wrong with these girls?) could go many different directions, some of them supernatural. How did you maintain that real-or-not-real balance?

Thank you! That was one of my biggest challenges so I’m glad it worked for you. I wanted the reader to experience how it felt for the characters and, given what the characters were going through—seeing this inexplicable contagion wreak havoc—it seemed inevitable that some of them would begin to feel supernatural elements at work. I wanted reading the book to feel like you were inside their heads. Feeling their fear, letting those fears get the best of you.

Thanks, Megan!

  1. I've seen excellent reviews of this, from people who don't ordinarily read YA, so it makes sense that it works as a crossover!

  4. I followed the real-life story that sparked this book pretty closely since my husband has Tourette Syndrome and we wondered if there was an environmental cause for the tics. But I love that the not knowing the cause is what drives the book--that fear and mystery and stress. Definitely want to read this! hdavis67 (at) gmail
