March Reads for the Road

Hey everyone! Back again with a handful of reading recommendations straight from the mouths of YA Highwayers. Reads for the Roads works like this.

Now on to the recs! *sparkles!!*

YA:

Kristin read SCARLET by A.C. Gaughen and totally loved the unique voice, the clever spin on the Robin Hood story and the wonderfully developed main character. She's looking forward to continuing the tale in Gaughen's follow-up, THE LADY THIEF. She also read Matt de la Pena's THE LIVING: an engrossing and fast-paced tale about survival. Some of the plot points were obvious, but the survival aspects were thrilling and full of tension.

Steph recommends two fab books. MIDWINTERBLOOD by Marcus Sedgwick: 7 darkly intertwined stories are told chronologically backwards in this haunting story of love and sacrifice and THE GOSPEL OF WINTER by Brendan Kiely:  A sensitive and beautifully told story about a boy trying to cope in the aftermath of
abuse at the hands of his priest.

Several YA Highwayers read Tyra Banks' MODELLAND last month, and Amy has the best rec for it: This story was, without a doubt, the most delightfully bizarre thing I've read in a very long time. I can't even begin to describe the sort of things that go down in this book, but amongst the highlights were a scene involving marshmallow and caramel showers (literally) and a monster made of human arms that plays haunting melodies with its victims' leftover parts. Yes, you read that right. Try it on for smize, if you dare.

NA:

Kaitlin recommends Sarah Harian's New Adult book THE WICKED WE HAVE DONE because it was incredibly refreshing to read an NA spec fic, and she stayed up MUCH later than she should've to finish it on its release day.

Adult:

Thanks to recommendations from Sumayyah and Sarah, Kristin read THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS and loved the excellent world building and character development. Perfect for epic fantasy fans who want something a little bit different, but still sweeping.

  1. I am too scared to read Modelland. I just am. But I am super stoked to read The Wicked We Have Done. I have it on my kindle and with the possibility of it being a book that would make me miss out on sleep, I am going to start it as soon as I finish reading Attachment by Rainbow Rowell! Oh, and Scarlet! I have that on my shelf too, I need to read it soon!
