It Must be Fate! FATES by our own Lanie Bross is out today!

We are so excited here at the YA Highway! Today is the release of our own Lanie (Lee) Bross' debut FATES. We've got an interview with Lanie, a giveaway, and you can check out some of our good old-fashioned prognostication over here. Come join the fun!

from goodreads

One moment. One foolish desire. One mistake. And Corinthe lost everything.

She fell from her tranquil life in Pyralis Terra and found herself exiled to the human world. Her punishment? To make sure people's fates unfold according to plan. Now, years later, Corinthe has one last assignment: kill Lucas Kaller. His death will be her ticket home.

But for the first time, Corinthe feels a tingle of doubt. It begins as a lump in her throat, then grows toward her heart, and suddenly she feels like she is falling all over again--this time for a boy she knows she can never have. Because it is written: one of them must live, and one of them must die. In a universe where every moment, every second, every fate has already been decided, where does love fit in?

Interview!

1. Tell us about your main character, Corinthe. Her life is obviously very different from most teenage girls, but what
makes her relatable?

Corinthe is an exiled Fate who has to pay her penance on Earth. Her one and only goal has been to do everything she's told in order to return home, to Pyralis Terra. I think what makes her relatable is that she starts out blindly following orders because that's what she's always known, but along the way, she starts to question why. I think that being a teenager is about pushing those boundaries to discover who you really are, and questioning everything is what they do. (I know I did, in a big way!) In the end, you have to decide for yourself what you believe and how you grow, which is something that Corinthe does in FATES.

2. What was your favorite scene to write?

Hmmm, I think that the coolest scene took pace in the Forest of Blood Nymphs. It was visceral and lush. But my favorite scene in the book is probably the first time Luc and Corinthe kiss. Yes, I'm a sucker for that first kiss.

3. What was the most challenging?

The worldbuilding! I have always admired fantasy writers who can create elaborate worlds where you lose yourself for days. But, when you are doing it yourself, its not as easy as just making stuff up. There has to be reason and consistency, even if its in the inconsistency of that world. Corinthe and Luc travel through a bunch of different worlds in FATES, so it was even harder to keep them separate, but together in a cohesive Universe type of way.

4. What have you learned about drafting and editing during this process?

That there is always something that needs to be fixed! LOL But seriously, I have fabulous editors who ask the right questions and who made this book go from a jumble of words into something I am really proud of!

5. What's next for you?

Well, the sequel to FATES is done and that comes out January 2015, and there are a couple of short stories with characters from FATES also. Summer of 2014 I have a YA Historical releasing from Disney/Hyperion with the sequel to that the following year.
