ALA 2013 Wrap Up!

YA Highway went to the ALA Conference in Chicago last weekend and had such a wonderful time. There's something very special about being around so many librarians. These are people who advocate for books and reading and readers for a living. It makes for a pretty amazing atmosphere!

Deb and I arrived in Chicago on Thursday, along with authors Mindy McGinnis (NOT A DROP TO DRINK) and Kate Karyus Quinn (ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE). Together we are part of the Class of 2k13, a debut authors group that had a panel on Friday morning. We had a lot of work to do and spent Thursday evening frantically getting organized. Sixteen people working in one hotel room makes for a hectic environment, but we had fun doing it!

Friday morning's biggest challenge was making our way through the Blackhawks celebration parade in downtown Chicago.
The panel was amazing. So many people came! We talked about our books and then Veronica led us all in an awesome trivia game. (Congrats again to my fast-thinking team, Charm & Brains, who won the game and subsequent bragging rights for the rest of ALA.)

There was some Chicago sight seeing that occurred. And YA Highway love.

On Friday evening the exhibit hall opened. I was very excited to be signing CHARM & STRANGE at the Macmillan booth alongside Erica Lorraine Scheidt (USES FOR BOYS). So many people came by! It was a bit of a blur, but so fun to meet people.

After the signing, Erica and I went and said hello to the brilliant Andrew Karre, editor of Carolrhoda Books.

Then came the Great Blogger Meet Up hosted by YA Highway, Stacked, and Chicagoland Kidlit Drinks Night. We packed the M Lounge. Saturday was spent wandering the exhibit hall, learning about upcoming books, and connecting with librarians and bloggers and all sorts of writer friends. It was so much fun!

See you next year!
