Road Trip Wednesday #129: What Else Do You Do With Your Books?

Welcome to our 129th Road Trip Wednesday!

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

We'd love for you to participate! Just answer the prompt on your own blog and leave a link - or, if you prefer, you can include your answer in the comments.

This Week's Topic:
What's your favorite use for a book besides reading it?

It takes about 12 hours to read a book, but the book spends a lot more time than that in the home, as a doorstop, a place to hide jewelry, even an old-fashioned petal press.  Is there anything you do with books before/after you've read them? (Pictures encouraged!)

  1. Not really. I sometimes lend my hard copies to friends, but there's not much else you can do with ebooks, other than read them.

  2. Books are just books for me. One book did serve as protection from spiders once. http://r-moran.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/rtw-motivation-and-spider-killers.html

  4. I wish I had something creative to post for this one! Oh well. Maybe I'll start thinking of new ideas.

  5. I wanted to answer "donate to a ticker-tape parade," but mine's a little different.

  6. Cut up books??? Sacrilege! i don't think I could bring myself to do that, but some of the resulting artwork is admittedly amazing. Mostly I just build towering stacks of books that won't fit in any of our 8 bookcases. My husband pointed out that if we move some books, we might have room for another actual bookcase.

And btw, the bidding on critiques is getting heated over at the Pens for Paws Auction, and there are more to come throughout the week!

  7. Ok, so I wasn't going to post because I thought, hmm ... I don't do anything else with books other than read them. but then I remembered! When we moved here, the movers broke the leg off of our armchair. Not to be deterred, we replaced the leg with a stack of textbooks with titles like "Optical properties of thermodynamic reactions" and "Particle-fraction dimensions of whoseewhats" and such ... They are my new favorite books. So supportive.

  8. I wonder if anyone will have the same answer as me? If someone does, I bet it will be better than my 5 minute attempt. :) Here it is.

  10. I use books I'm not reading for coasters while I drink tea and read other books. I also occasionally use old textbooks and suchlike to make mixed media artworks. And I burned a book I didn't like, once.

  11. Really interesting question! I never thought about using books for anything else outside of reading before.

  13. Unfortunately I am e-book reader so nothing special I do! But I thought it was a great question so found some examples/ideas for people who do want to re-purpose their books: http://katharinabrendel.blogspot.com.es/2012/05/129th-road-trip-wednesday-re-purposing.html

  14. Mostly the only thing I do with books besides reading them is give them as gifts. But when I got my ARCs, I was so giddy, I used them to make a stop-motion video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAFtaZBEe7E

Maybe I need to cut down on the caffeine?
