Book Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Last month, my friends and I celebrated graduating from high school by taking a week-long trip to the beach. It was SO FUN! I packed a few books to read while listening to the waves, including one from BEA that won't be released until September 27th: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin. And lemme tell you, I'm glad I packed it. Because by the time I had finished reading and loving it, three of my friends also wanted to read it - it's currently making the rounds throughout our group!

Before I start the review, here's a little primer on what the book is all about. (You can read the first chapter here!)

Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.

She's wrong.

Intriguing, right? It's hard to know what to expect from the book with that summary. Will it be a thriller, a mystery, a horror, a romance, or something else entirely?

I'd say it's a mix of all of those, with a dash of something more. The author knows how a write a story that will keep you flipping pages, keep you wondering, keep you paranoid, keep you swooning, and so much more! To top it off, the characters are charming and funny: I loved reading about Mara's interactions with her brothers (there just aren't enough brothers in YA!) and her wise new best friend at school.

Then there's Noah, the love interest. Oh, Noah. At the BEA YA Buzz Panel, much was buzzed regarding Noah's swoon-worthiness. I have to admit, I wasn't so sure about the dude at first. I worried that Noah was going to be just another slightly- (or very-) overbearing YA boyfriend: rich, mysterious, cocky, and totally hot.

And yes, the book may toe the line when it comes to Twilight-esque romantical relations. But in the end, there's so much more depth to Noah and to the romance than could be predicted - and I LOVED it! Noah is hott (with two t's), but he's also vulnerable and real. And I love that Mara, who could easily fall into the "passive lamb" role, knows how to assert herself and pack a verbal punch in relationship banter. Awesome!

I gotta warn you: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is one creepy-in-a-good-way book, and the ending doesn't tie everything up in the slightest. But personally, I can't wait to go on another wild ride with Mara, who is now one of my favorite YA main characters. Definitely pick this book up on September 27th and see what you think! Just don't look in the mirror...

  1. Wait ... was Noah called Adam in your copy of the ARC?

  2. Hmm, what an intriguing story. However, it sounds a little darker than I like my stories. I get into good books so deeply that when they're creepy, I FREAK out.

  3. Duuude! Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot. How could you *possibly* forget Noah Shaw's name?! It's the hottest freakin name ever, which corresponds nicely to the fact that he's the hottest YA boy ever!

  4. Wow, I'll definitely have to add this to my TBR list! Thanks for the recommendation. :D

  5. I can't wait to read this, I quickly added it to my wishlist when I saw the cover and summary. Great review by the way! :)

  6. I am looking forward to reading this book. Thanks for the review!

  7. Lenore & Em - OH MY GOSH, could I possibly be any ditzier? That's what I get for writing a review two weeks after reading the book. :D Name has been fixed! (So sorry, Noah! <3)

McKenzie - I wouldn't say it was too scary! Just... atmospheric. But there are some freaky parts, so keep yourself on guard <3

    Thanks for awesome comments guys!

  8. I'm officially intrigued. Looks like I have another book to add to my never ending "to read" list :)

  9. I can't wait for this one to arrive in my mailbox! I'm lucky enough to be part of a blog tour for the book and I'm all sorts of anxious for it to arrive as with every review I read it seems someone likes it for completely different reasons.

I think I'll have to pre-order it, too!
