Road Trip Wednesday is a "Blog Carnival," where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question and answer it on our own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.
We'd love for you to participate! Just answer the prompt on your own blog and leave a link in the comments - or, if you prefer, you can include your answer in the comments.
This week's topic:
A novel's opening is like a pick up line. If it's good, you might take it home. If it's bad... well. You know. What are your favorite first lines? How do your own WIPs start?
Kate: "I've blogged at length about my favorite book openings..."
Michelle: "It could be a simple statement of an odd fact that piques your interest..."
Kaitlin: "When I read books, I want them to be interesting, you know?"
Amanda: "I love opening a book, reading the first sentence, and instantly falling into the story."
Kristin O.: "When I read the beginning of a book like JELLICOE ROAD, something implodes inside me."
Kristin M: "Something mysterious, something explosive, something poetic . . ."
I'm still obsessed with "The Sky is Everywhere," so I posted the first paragraph... so good.

My first road trip in FOREVER :) http://karlanellenbach-lastword.blogspot.com/2010/10/first-lines-you-had-me-at.html
ReplyDeleteMy fave WIP first line is this: "If there's something weirder than kissing a girl you've never met, I don't know what it is."
ReplyDeleteI'm not good at faves in general, but I loved the opening lines of AS YOU WISH by Jackson Pearce.
"All Ive learned in today's Shakespeare class is: Sometimes you have to fall in love with the wrong person just so you can find the right person. A more useful lesson would've been: Sometimes the right person doesn't love you back. Or sometimes the right person is gay. Or sometimes you just aren't the right person.
Thanks a lot Shakespeare. "
Fun topic, and I got to revist some of my faves!

Great topic. I'm a bit nervous about posting my response as opening lines are my biggest writing weakness, but here it is anyways.

I meant to post this yesterday but I got delayed so I couldn't. :( I used to reply to these prompts with Chaos of LCD, but I got myself a writing only blog for stuff like this. :D
